Quarries of the past

IOSH Stand: E30
Following the loss of traditional livelihoods due to drought, widowed Maasai women turned to unsafe quarry work to survive. With no support systems in place, they faced daily physical danger and financial insecurity. IOSH has supported interventions to transition these women into safer, formalised employment through skills training, land access, and cooperative formation. These changes have created new opportunities in regenerative agriculture and local manufacturing – offering dignity, safety, and renewed prospects.
