Hearing damage is irreversible

The ears are a remarkable piece of detection equipment, using their acoustic properties to pick up a huge range of frequencies and volumes from a whisper to an explosion. They are built to be resilient, but they are, unfortunately, not invincible. The complex and delicate internal mechanisms can become damaged, resulting in hearing loss, which is an irreversible process.

There are plenty of environmental and occupational sources of noise, especially in urban environments. In residential and public areas, excessive noise can be disruptive to people’s lives, and so-called ‘noise-induced hearing loss’ (NIHL), which can also involve symptoms like tinnitus, has been a particular concern in both the ambient environment and workplaces for a long time.

Monitoring and compliance

For this reason, environmental noise monitoring has an important role in outdoor construction, events, and loud industrial processes, while in the workplace, employers a duty of care to their employees working in noisy settings. Given that NIHL is a cumulative process that can build up over many years from both workplace and environmental exposure, good workplace monitoring and record keeping is increasingly relevant both for worker protection and liability issues.
